Kneze is a bay, small hamlet and a port on the northern coast of the island Korcula, overlooking the peninsula Peljesac and Peljesac channel, famous windsurfing destination which is best known for strong westerly winds that blow in the almost every day in the summertime ("maestral" and "tramuntana"). The Kneze hamlet is located approximately 1 kilometer to the east from the Kneže bay and about nine kilometers to the west from the town of Korčula. Kneze is located on the road which connects town Korcula with the village Racisce, which is an old sailor's village located 2.5 kilometers to the west from the Kneze bay. There are regular bus connections which connect Kneza with town of Korcula and Racisce several times per day, as well as with other places and coves along the way to the east, such as Zrnovska Banja, Medvidnjak and Vrbovica. Since Racisce is just 2.5 kilometers to the west, it is easily reachable also by foot. Further to the west from Racisce, two beautiful coves and beaches are located, which are accessible only by pedestrian path: "Vaja" and "Samograd". It is also important to mention that Kneza is connected by a 3.5 kilometers long pedestrian pathway through the lush vegetation with the village of Pupnat in the interior of the island of Korcula, and from there you can easily reach Zrnovo, another beautiful town in the hinterland of the island.
Kneze began to develop in the 19th century, mainly as a port for the village of Pupnat, which is located in the hinterland of the island Korcula. The port began to develop in the wide bay of Kneza, which is well protected from wind, especially from norther and western winds, which are most dangerous in the Peljesac channel. The bay in enclosed and protected by cape "Kneza", and two small islands named "Mala Kneza" and "Velika Kneza", meaning "Small Kneza" and "Big Kneza". On the Vela Kneza island there is lighthouse. The bay in between is relatively shallow, but deep enough for most of ships (average depth is 5 meters). The sea bottom is sandy, with lush marine life including seas-shells and underwater fields of poseidonia. The bay is surrounded with lush vegetation, and with shallow sea, sandy beaches and and tirquise color of the sea form a dreamlike visual spectacle, which is more reminiscent to a Pacific atoll than to a Mediterranean island. Due to the shallowness of the sea, and protected location of the bay, the sea warms faster here, and it is always little warmer than in surroundings. This, together with sandy beaches make Kneze ideal destination for families with small children. Thanks to regular currents, which enter the bay on a cyclical basis daily, the sea is perfectly clean and crystal clear. The coast further to the west, in the direction of Racisce is rocky, with deep water and strong currents and rich marine life, which makes this part of the coast very interesting and inviting for divers, possibly the most interesting part on the northern coast of the island of Korcula.
In the bay of Kneze there are several sand beaches, taverns and lots of holiday houses available for rent. Private accommodation renters are very welcoming, and always ready to go an extra mile for more satisfied guests. Accommodation is available in private apartments, houses and rooms. The main road from Racisce to Korcula goes just few meters from the sea, so most of the accommodation available for rent is situated above main road, which means one must cross the main road from their booked accommodation to get to the beach, which is very important to know since we always recommend accommodation in Kneza for families with small children, for our clients who are in search for island Korcula accommodation. However, the location of the main road is not a big problem, since the road is not very busy, and although bearing the name of main road, it is in nature a small local road, with very little traffic. We always recommend renting self catering apartment or holiday house, because even though there are several taverns in Kneza, the gastronomic offer is not that large for longer stays. If you would like to eat out during the entire time of your stay, the vicinity of the town of Korcula makes this a viable possibility.
